Reston, Va. – The Energy Systems Integration Group (ESIG), the leading source of global expertise for energy systems integration and operations, announced today that Matthew Schuerger has been named Senior Fellow. He joins ESIG with more than 35 years of experience in the power industry.
For the eight years prior to joining ESIG, Schuerger was a Commissioner of the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission. In this role, he provided key state, regional, and national leadership on reliability and integrated planning. His work included leading the commission on major updates to state standards, in collaboration with utilities and a broad set of engaged stakeholders, to ensure safe and reliable interconnection and operation of distributed energy resources in Minnesota; advancements in regional transmission planning and system reliability through the Organization of Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) States; and engagement with state regulators on resource adequacy, integrated planning, and DERs through the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC).
“Matt is a true industry veteran and significant source of practical technical knowledge,” said Debbie Lew, ESIG’s Associate Director. “His experience in the power systems industry is unmatched and will be a great asset to not only our team, but also our members, ESIG projects and task forces and the industry as a whole.”
Schuerger has been a longtime contributor and active participant in several key energy industry groups, including MISO, North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC). In his role as ESIG’s Senior Fellow, he will provide leadership and support to several ESIG working groups and task forces, including the Distributed Energy Resources Working Group, which covers DERs, demand flexibility, electrification, load forecasting, integrated planning and other topics. Additionally, Schuerger will provide ESIG leadership to support the System Operation and Market Design Working Group, covering resource adequacy, as well as the System Planning Working Group, including transmission planning, integrated planning and other system planning.
“ESIG serves as the industry’s go-to source for expertise on energy systems integration, planning, and operations, and I am thrilled to join the team and progress critical industry research and work,” added Schuerger. “ESIG Working Groups and Task Forces have become essential contributors to the industry’s future, and I am pleased to have the opportunity to take a leadership role among some of the brightest minds of our generation.”
